Exchange, Wechsel, Cambio, Mjenjačnica... PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Save money, exhange money! You are probably wondering what "Mjenjačnica" stands for? It is Croatian translation for Exchange office. You will find this information useful while looking for Exchange office in Croatia. Altought Croatians speak english in general, and you will find signs in different languages, but, just in case you encounter Mjenjačnica - it definitely stands for Exchange office...

Be careful

Exchange rates can be very tricky. On large amount of money, even a smal 0.1 change can cost you some money. Especially if you change from stronger currencies and larger amounts like Euro or British pound. Before converting money we suggest you double check exchange rates and ask employee for confirmation, then change. Safest way to exchange will probably be in well known exchange offices, hotels and ofcourse banks. Banks in general have lower rate but not so much and they are safe.

Golden rule! - Use only one exchange place. Don't test them around!

If you find place where you are satisfied with service stick with that method.

Rates

At this moment, 1 EURO is approximately 7,3 KUNA. So if you get 690kn or 700kn for its fraud and you should report to tourist inspection as soon as possible and make a complaint.

Exchange offices in Cavtat and Dubrovnik

Every major hotel or larger apartments block has its own exchange office. Old city of Cavtat has at least 3 exchange offices and Dubrovnik has really plenty, most of them located on Stradun (main street) in Old city. Also Cavtat has 2 large banks in Old city, you can't miss them. There are 5-6 large hotels in Cavtat like Hotel Albatros, Epidaurus, Croatia, Cavtat, Supetar - they all have their own exchange offices.

If ran out of Croatian kuna and its late, exchange office closed, what to do?

Ok, there is always a solution to visit hotel and exchange (altought some exchange offices in hotels have their own work time) OR you can sacrifice some of your kuna's and exchange in any bar, restaurant or night club. Expected loss would be 2-5% of your total amount - around 20kn. So for 100 euros, you will get rate like 7.0 or 7.1, if you hit 7.2-3 - EXHANGE immediately. Before consuming anything it is reccommended to ask first if they accept euros, in most cases (i speak around 95%) they will. Even if the later say no, you can blame them for not displaying sign or something and get free drinks, or dinner who knows.

In the end we really suggest you exchange money, no matter which currency you use. For example - Drinks that cost 35kn you will pay 5-6 euros and get no change back. If you pay in kuna's, you will pay 35kn and save 10 kuna's, enough for ice cream or something. Imagine you pay big dinner like this...
