With the opening of this five-star hotel, Đakovo will additionally enrich its tourism offer. It is a town known for its cathedral, the basilica of St. Peter built between 1866 and 1882, for which Pope John XXIII said that it was the most beautiful church between Venice and Constantinople. Its seven richly decorated alters, numerous sculptures, graphics and frescos of famous artists do not leave anyone indifferent. Seven million bricks were used for the construction of the cathedral and the stone was imported from various European states. It was build as a mixture of Romanic, Gothic and Renaissance styles and was called a »monster of art» at the time. Another attraction found in Đakovo is the oldest Lipzzaner stable stud farm for breeding horses in Europe, founded in 1506 is. Đakovo and its horse farm were visited by the British Queen Elisabeth II and in 2003, by the Pope John Paul II. |
