Martinje - In the Catholic calendar, the 11th of November is the holiday of St. Martin and in Croatia, especially in its northwestern part, `Martinje` is celebrated as a holy day of young wine. These celebrations date back to pre Christian times and mark the period when works outside of the home, in the fields, would come to an end and preparations for the winter would begin. In the wine growing areas this is the time that marks the end of all vineyard activities.

Martinje is traditionally celebrated from year to year in a «merry and working» manner across the wider area of Zagreb. Places such as Dugo Selo, whose patron saint is Saint Martin, stand out with their traditions and rich programs as well as Samobor, Sveti Ivan Zelina, Velika Gorica and Jastrebarsko. In the Koprivnica-Križevci County, young wine will be blessed in Križevci and Kalnik, while in the Međimurje County it will be blessed on the Štigova Wine Road.

Young wine will be blessed in numerous other places and towns of northwest Croatia but also in other parts of the country such as in Istrian towns of Momjan, Rovinj, Vrsar, Barban and Buzet.
