AMERICAN JAZZ: The internationally acclaimed Brubeck Brothers Quartet will be the resident jazz ensemble during the Festival. The Brubeck Brothers Quartet features two brothers of one of America’s most accomplished jazz family: Daniel Brubeck (drums) and Chris Brubeck (bass & trombone). Guitarist Mike DeMicco and Chuck Lamb (piano) complete this dynamic jazz quartet. The quartet has performed in concert throughout North America and Europe, and has performed at major jazz festivals, including the Newport, Detroit, Las Vegas, Monterey, Ravinia and Vancouver Jazz Festivals. These versatile musicians also collaborate with orchestras. With Chris Brubeck’s compositions and arrangements, the Brubeck Brothers Quartet has joined with musicians from the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Russian National Symphony Orchestra to perform jazz and ‘classical crossover’ repertoire.

Chris Brubeck has recorded many of his “jazz-classical crossover” compositions with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, and was recently commissioned by the Boston Symphony Pops Orchestra to compose a new jazz concerto for orchestra—called Convergence. “Without putting too much of an onus on Chris Brubeck,” says Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart, “we’re always looking for the new Gershwin who can take the sounds in American popular musical culture and integrate them into the context of the orchestra, much the way Gershwin and Bernstein did.” Lockhart would know, being not only the innovative leader of the USA’s most highly regarded Pops Orchestra, but the driving force behind the commission of Convergence, Brubeck’s fascinating concerto for orchestra.

The Brubeck Brothers Quartet will perform jazz standards, contemporary jazz compositions—and of course, many of the famous jazz songs made popular by Dave Brubeck, including “Blue Rondo a la Turk”, “Take 5”, “Cassandra” and others. These and other famous jazz standards are arranged by Chris Brubeck for jazz quartet and orchestra. The Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Festival Artistic Director and Clarinetist Michael Kissinger, will join the Brubeck Brothers Quartet for the May 27th Friday Night Gala Concert and on Sunday, May 29th. Pianist Maria Manzo and maestro Kissinger will perform in concert with the Brubeck Brothers on Saturday, May 28th. All concerts take place at Bošković Square (Boškovićeva Poljana) each night beginning at 20:30 (8:30 PM)

CROATIAN WINES: Numerous award winning Croatian wines will be available to taste and sample during the concerts at Bošković Square and at Luza Square. The earliest wine makers in Croatia were from the Illyric tribes, dating from 2200 BC. The Greeks and Romans developed the tradition, and by the year 1400 the first laws on wine production are written in the Dubrovnik Republic. Today, Croatian wine makers produce 620 different kinds of wine from 54 grape varieties. There are over 300 defined wine regions in Croatia, which are largely divided between the warmer continental areas and the coastal stretches that boast the flawless Mediterranean temperatures.
Come to the Festival to sample and taste some of the best of Croatian wines—such as Plavac Mali, Dingac, Rukatac, Postup, Pošip, the sweet and sumptuously rich Dalmatian desert wine, Prošek… and much more! You will have an opportunity to sample and taste typical regional wines—such as Plavac Mali, Pošip, Zinfandel—from some of the region’s best wineries, including Korta Katarina (www.kortakatarinawinery.com) Crvic Vineyards, Philip Vineyards, Mokalo-Bura Vineyards (www.mokalo.hr) and others. As we say in Croatia: Zivijele! (Cheers!)

FINE ARTISTS: Dubrovnik is home to many talented visual artists, from painters to sculptors, from glassblowers to potters. The 2011 Festival will feature the art of 10 award-winning regional painters: Dubravka Rathman, Dubravko Mokrovic, Izabela Matos, Jagoda Lasic, Josip Skerly, Maja, Kovacevic, Mirica Dubcic, Miso Baricevic, Nino Dubcic, and Valter Konzul. Their art will be displayed at Luza Square, and will be available for sale during the Festival. Visit www.dubrovnikwinejazz.com to see their beautiful art.

ENJOY! What could be better for the cultural-minded traveler? Internationally acclaimed jazz musicians, outstanding Croatian wines, and beautiful art, right here, in the Pearl of the Adriatic—Dubrovnik!
