Information on methods of payment, currency, tax returns, banks and customs:
Currency: Kuna (1 Kuna = 100 Lipa). Coins: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 Lipa, and 1, 2, 5 and 25 Kuna Banknotes: 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 Kuna Payment can be made only in Kuna, and foreign currency can be exchanged at banks, exchange offices, postal offices and most tourist agencies, hotels and camps. Banks are open all day from Monday to Friday, during mornings on Saturdays, and closed on Sundays. There are numerous ATM machines located all over the city. Credit cards: most hotels, restaurants and shops accept credit cards (American Express, Diners Club, Eurocard/Mastercard, Visa, Sport Card International). Custom regulations: Croatian Customs regulations are in line with standard European Union countries. Foreign currency can be carried in and out freely; national currency up to 15,000 kuna. Expensive professional and technical equipment must be reported at the border. Dogs and cats accompanied by their owner must have an International Certificate from an official veterinarian stating that at least 15 days have passed since receiving a rabies vaccination, not older than six months. Tax refunds for foreigners can be done with a validated Tax Cheque receipt for purchased goods valued at over 500 kuna upon leaving the country. Information: Croatian Customs Office Tel: 01 6102 333 Web: www.carina.hr Tax refunds for foreigners: Tourists making purchases in Croatia (apart from petroleum derivatives) which exceed 500 Kuna per receipt may claim a VAT tax return ("PDV"). At point of purchase, the sales person will provide a PDV-P form on request, which should be filled out and stamped on the spot. On leaving Croatia, the receipt must be verified and stamped by the Croatian Customs service. A PDV refund in Kuna can be obtained within six months, either at the same shop where the goods were purchased (in which case the tax is refunded immediately), or by posting the verified receipt back to the shop, together with the account number into which the refund should be paid. In this case, the tax refund is dealt with within 15 days of receipt of the claim. |
