The Dubrovnik cable car, which will celebrate its fortieth year in 2009, still remains the only one of its kind on the Adriatic. Up until its destruction in 1991, it transported twenty million passengers. The investors have forecast 250,000 sightseers annually, once the reconstruction work is finished.
After the devastated machinery is dismantled, the lower station will be expanded. Work on the upper station next to Fort “Imperial” will then follow, which is included in the future golf park on Mount Srđ. “Atlas Real Estate” will build new support pillars, a cable support network and an electric power station whose position is marked into the Dubrovnik GUP (zoning) plans. History: The best views of Dubrovnik and the surrounding area are seen from the top of the Srd Hill. Dubrovnik Cable Car was built back in 1969 and was always enthusiastically used by more than 2,5 million visitors who wanted to enjoy the most beautiful panoramic view. On a clear day, you can see up to 60 km (37 miles). For this reason the neighboring fort Imperial was strategically built on this privileged spot, back in the early 19th century. Technical details: Two cabins, holding 30 passengers, will need less than 3 minutes to negotiate the 778 meter distance between the lower and upper station, passing over one tower. The upper station, located at 405 meters above sea level, will have two terraces equipped with binocular telescopes, a snack bar and a panoramic restaurant, a souvenir shop, restrooms (disabled access) and an amphitheater seating 250 persons. The amphitheater is available for hire for an event or a special occasion. The lower station will offer a comfortable space to disembark the guests from two coaches, at a time, with suitable restrooms facilities (disabled access). |
